Why It's Important for Farmers to Have Trees in Their Fields

    Jan 05, 2024

Trees and farms create an idyllic rural setting that inspires many to seek the solace of nature and those natural settings. What they don't realize, though, is the very real benefits that trees provide. For example, according to One Tree Planted, one tree added to a field or pasture by a local tree planter can increase the diversity of birds by up to 80%. As long as those birds don't feed on the local crops, that is a bonus. Other more practical benefits exist, too. Here's why it's important for farmers to have trees in their fields.

    Trees Prevent Wind Erosion

Wind is a constant danger for farms and could cause wind erosion that blows away good soil and causes crops to die. When a local tree planter places trees in an otherwise open field, the trees create an effective wind block during the growing season. When enough trees are growing at reasonably spaced distances, the field has an effective barrier against wind erosion, which protects the uppermost layers of soil and the crops that the farmer is growing or livestock that are being raised.

    Roots Counteract Soil Erosion

Trees have extensive root systems that hold the soil together while anchoring the tree to the ground and nourishing it. The roots serve a very important purpose, which is to keep the soil in place. A combination of roots and moisture helps soil to stay in place when it's raining or when the wind is blowing, which means the crops are protected during inclement weather. Tree roots are very important for protecting the soil while also drawing nourishment from it. When the soil can support trees, the trees support the soil, which in turn supports agriculture.

    Leaves Provide Comforting Shade

Most people understand the benefits of shade trees on their properties. They keep the sun's hot UV rays from heating things up and breaking them down over time. Shade trees provide similar benefits for farms by creating shaded areas for crops and where cows and other livestock might gather to eat and relax in the cooling shade of a tree. Plus, they look terrific during the fall color change, which adds to the farm's aesthetic appeal.
